Winona Ryder Professionally Winona Ryder, was born in Winona Minnesota. Her name was chosen by her parents in honor of the town where her birthplace was. Her father Michel Horowitz, and mother Cynthia Palmer are authors and editors. Ryder's father was from the Jewish family. Ryder believes she is Jewish. Ryder has two half-siblings younger than her, Jubal and Sunyata. Ryder moved together with her family to Mendocino County California at the age of seven. There was no electricity. Ryder was a voracious reader who spent all of her time reading books as she had no TV. In 1983, when she was 12 Ryder was accepted into the American Conservatory Theatre to take classes in acting. When she was 15, Ryder landed a role in Lucas, her first major film. Ryder suffered bullying in the school she attended. Her hope was that the acting profession would end that. But, unfortunately, that didn't occur. She continued to pursue the goals she had set. Her breakthrough occurred in the year 1988, when Tim Burton's Beetlejuice. Ryder kept playing successful roles in various films. The actor won two Academy Awards were nominated, one for The Age of Innocence (1996).
